Why are girls and boys different?

Watch the video together and discuss:

[Parent] Share with your child about the day you discovered their sex.

[Child] Which part of your body are you most proud of?

Key points

  • All living things are made up of tiny cells, and each cell contains threads called chromosomes.
  • Chromosomes carry information from a mother and a father to their child.
  • Girls have XX chromosomes, while boys have XY chromosomes. These sex chromosomes determine whether you are a boy or a girl.
  • Our bodies also have different biological functions.

Wrap it up:

What determines whether a baby is a boy or a girl? Genes are something we are born with, and this includes the chromosomes that determine our sex.

Sometimes a person may not like the sex they were born with, and some parents may try to determine the sex of their baby because they prefer having a son or a daughter. There are always things about the opposite sex that we might think is comparably better, but nonetheless, we can learn to appreciate what makes us uniquely male or female!
